Windbreaks are a common feature around homes, helping with harsh winter winds and blowing snow. The result can be less money spent on heating one's house, while slowing down any drifting snow around the yard. Evergreens are frequently used in windbreak rows, but they grow slow, so faster growing trees need to be used early on in the windbreak's life.
There are various species and hybrid trees in the willow genus that can be used successfully in a windbreak. These fast growing trees quickly help slow down the wind when planted with close spacing.
One hybrid willow, known as the Bigfoot Willow, can grow faster than any other tree for windbreak purposes. The big cuttings are planted three feet apart in a row and can be ten to fifteen feet tall by the end of the first growing season. This rapid tree can be planted with slower-growing evergreens. Also, you can plant multiple rows of this willow hybrid, creating a dense windbreak in record time. The multiple rows can be spaced ten feet apart. Within the rows, the trees can be staggered and spaced five feet apart.
There are other willows that can be used for windbreaks, but they are not as fast growing as the Bigfoot Willow Hybrid. Inferno Hybrid Willow does grow pretty fast. This clone has more upright growth than the Bigfoot Willow, so can be planted closer to a fence or evergreen row. Also, the Inferno Willow Hybrid has more ornamental appeal. The colored stems on this hybrid tree are very noticeable in winter.
